Description:
The New Prague Living Lab is adjacent to the elementary school, across the street from the high school and just a couple of blocks from the middle school. The pond, with two nesting islands on it, was excavated in 1990-91 on school land. The Construction Trades Class has built a floating dock to provide easy and safe access to the water for sampling activities. The class has also built an overlook deck and an outdoor classroom.
A "wildlife kitchen" of native shrubs and small trees has been added to provide year round food sources and cover for wildlife species. The middle school student council designated $200 of their funds to help pay for the planting. Middle school student mentors assisted elementary students in planting the trees and shrubs. A memorial forest is also being created along one edge of the site. Community members donate native trees in memory of loved ones.
Some middle school teachers participated in curriculum writing workshops to integrate the nature area into their curriculum. They created units that incorporated art, birds, winter studies, and arthropod studies. Elementary students have used the nature area for mapping and orienteering. High school students have conducted macro-invertebrate studies in the stream.
