Boreal Birding Festival at Wolf Ridge

Spring is an explosion of life in the North! Discovering the birds, wildflowers, geology and more of this dynamic and rich northern landscape is the focus of the Boreal Birding and Northern Landscapes festival. The event is coordinated by the North House Folk School, with events taking place at a variety of north shore locations, including Wolf Ridge.

Birding for the Entire Family

  • Saturday, June 5
  • 8:00am-Noon (8:30-10:30 formal instruction; 10:30-noon banding station)
  • Everyone welcome
  • $15/person
  • No pre-registration required

Learn basic birding and binocular techniques as you search for birds along Sawmill Creek Valley. See beautiful songbirds up-close and personal as naturalists band them for research. Explore the study site for birds and mingle with the naturalists. Help compile a bird list for that morning’s study. Meet at Wolf Ridge’s Forest Ecology Building. Binoculars supplied.

Peregrines and Other North Shore Raptors

  • Saturday, June 5
  • 1:30-4pm
  • Geared toward families, everyone welcome
  • $15/person
  • No pre-registration required

Meet at the Silver Bay AmericInn for a visit with and learning about live raptors. Join a WR naturalist who will introduce you to several live raptors, birds of prey, such as hawks, owls and falcons. The final guest is a Peregrine Falcon, with whom you will learn of their amazing story of reintroduction to the North Shore. While common along the North Shore 50 years ago, by the 80s Peregrines had been wiped out from this area. Come learn what their current status is, and after visiting with our live Peregrine, the group will car pool to an active nest site to see Peregrines in the wild as well as an active nest site. Binoculars and spotting scope supplied. Taught at the Silver Bay AmericInn in their meeting room for the first 60min then outdoors to the nest site.
