March 11 Eastern Chipmunks Wake Up!
Cute, small mammals with white bellies, reddish brown fur above, and 1 white stripe bordered by 2 black stripes on the back have been seen at bird feeders since March 11. Yes, Eastern Chipmunks (Tamias striatus) are out of hibernation stimulated by warm air temperatures. They chatter cheerfully by rapidly repeating chip-chip-chip and a lower-pitched, slower chuck-chuck-chuck. Male and female chipmunks start to date and 1 litter per year of 3-5 young will be born in May. Welcome back, but be aware of long-tailed weasel, hawks, foxes, bobcat, and even house cats. - Joanna 朱艳
