Earth Sciences
We offer a variety of Earth Science classes, many of which are available year 'round, some seasonally. To varying degrees, these broad themes are the focus of each Earth Science class. See a complete list of Wolf Ridge's core curriculum themes and concepts.
- Natural Resources: The earth is essentially a closed system.
- Ecosystems: All living and non-living components of an environment interact with one another to form an ecosystem.
- Natural Systems: Every component of nature forms a cycle and is in constant change.
- Human Culture and History: Humans and the environment are interrelated.
Three-Hour Morning or Afternoon Classes
Geology
Students will gain an overview of various kinds of rocks and how they were formed, and the changes that occur due to erosion. Hills will be climbed and glacial features will be observed. See full description.
Weather Forecasting
After learning some of the historic changes in the earth's climate, students will collect data on today's weather, then do demonstrations to understand cloud formation and low pressure systems. An outdoor game will explain the jet stream and its effect. Finally, students will use their new knowledge to create a forecast for the next day at Wolf Ridge. See full description.
1-1/2 Hour Evening Activity
Astronomy Telescope (outdoors)
Using a telescope students will observe current astronomical events or objects. Major constellations in the night sky will be taught and illustrated with stories. (After 9pm, offered once for entire group). See full description.
Star Lab (indoor planetarium)
The Star Lab is an inflatable planetarium. Students learn about the night sky and the stories that accompany some of the constellations. This activity is typically led by Wolf Ridge staff. See full description.
